If you’re in your late 30s or early 40s and your makeup just doesn’t hit like it used to, you’re not alone. And you’re not doing anything wrong.
It’s not your skin that’s failing you.
It’s your routine that’s outdated.
And as your skin changes, your makeup needs to change with it. What worked when you were 26 just isn’t built for your 42-year-old face. (And that’s not a bad thing.)
Let’s talk about why that happens, what your skin actually needs now, and where to start when it all feels a little overwhelming.
Your 20s Routine Isn’t Built for Your 40s Skin

Let’s be honest: in our 20s, most of us weren’t exactly skincare-savvy. We could skip moisturizer, wear heavy foundation, sleep in our makeup, and somehow still look “fine.” Our skin was firm, bouncy, and full of collagen. Even bad beauty habits didn’t show up right away (like my lack of sunscreen and apricot face scrub!).
But now? Everything shows. And that’s not because your skin is “bad” now—it’s because your skin has evolved.
By our late 30s and 40s, we’re dealing with:
So if you’re still applying makeup like it’s 2013, chances are, it’s no longer flattering your face the way it used to.
And this isn’t about doing more. In fact, the solution is often doing less. But it IS about being smarter with our makeup and skincare.
Here's What Your Skin Needs Now (That It Didn't Before)
If you want your makeup to enhance—not fight—your skin, you need to adapt your products and techniques to match where you are now. That doesn’t mean a total overhaul or expensive new routine. It just means making intentional updates that work with your skin.
Hydration Over Heavy Coverage
As we age, our skin naturally loses moisture. Layering full-coverage matte products on top of dry or dehydrated skin is a recipe for creasing, cracking, and dullness. Instead, opt for hydrating formulas—think tinted moisturizers or cream foundations—that plump and support your skin while evening out tone.
Flexibility Over Filters
Those super-matte, long-wear formulas that looked flawless under 20-something lighting? They don’t flex with mature skin. You want products that move with you, especially around the eyes and mouth, where fine lines are most visible. Cream blushes, flexible concealers, and lightweight bases are your new BFFs.
Glow (Not Glitter)
You’ve probably heard shimmer is a no-go after 35. Not true. BUT placement and texture matter. Swap chunky glitter or frosty powders for cream-based highlighters or satin-finish shadows applied strategically. A soft glow on the lids or cheekbones lifts and brightens without emphasizing texture.

Strategic Simplicity
Aging skin doesn’t need more product, it needs more purpose. You don’t need a dozen steps. What you do need are smart, multitasking products that blend seamlessly and flatter your current features. The less you pile on, the more your natural beauty shines through.
Feeling Overwhelmed? Here's Where to Start
If this feels like a lot...breathe. You do not need to throw out your whole makeup drawer. You can make a big impact with just a few focused changes.
Start with these three:
1. Foundation
Trade in that full-coverage formula for something lighter, creamier, and more forgiving. A skin tint, BB cream, or hydrating foundation gives you a fresh base without settling into lines or clinging to texture. I have linked some favorites HERE, but of course, my ALL TIME FAVE is Seint. If you want a color match, just fill out this quiz and make sure to include your email so it gets shared with me and I can get you matched! If you want to learn more about Seint, I did a blog post all about it! I also have fallen IN LOVE with Riman Skincare (blog post HERE) and they have this amazing product called a Cushion and I shared more about that HERE.
2. Concealer
Still using the triangle technique? It’s time to let it go. The heavy concealer trick that used to “brighten” now drags your face down and highlights fine lines. Instead, apply a lightweight brightening concealer only at the inner and outer corners of the eyes. It lifts without caking. I have also linked some concealer favorites but, Seint also has that covered and if you do a color match, it will include your concealer color!
3. Blush
A cream blush instantly melts into the skin and mimics that natural, youthful flush—without sitting on top of your texture. Bonus: most cream blushes double as lip tints, giving you a cohesive glow with one swipe. This collection from Seint has you covered with all the best lip and cheek colors! But I have also included some favorites HERE.

Final Thought: Aging Isn’t the Enemy—
Outdated Routines Are

Your 40s can be your most confident, radiant years if you stop chasing trends that don’t serve you and start working with your skin, not against it.
You don’t need a full beat. You need a beauty routine that honors who you are now.
And trust me, you can glow without the glam squad, the 10-step contour, or the over-filtered tutorials.
This is real beauty for real life. And it’s never too late to glow differently.
