When it comes to achieving a sun-kissed glow without the harmful effects of UV rays, self tanner and spray tan are two popular options. Both methods offer a safe alternative to traditional sunbathing or tanning beds, allowing you to enjoy a beautiful tan without exposing your skin to potential damage. So, when it comes to Self Tanner versus Spray Tan, which is better? Well, we will explore the pros and cons of self tanner and spray tan, and why self tanner emerges as the superior choice for achieving a flawless and natural-looking tan.
Self Tanner Versus Spray Tan When It Comes to Convenience and Accessibility
Self Tanner: The convenience of self tanner cannot be overstated. With a wide range of self-tanning products available on the market, you can easily find one that suits your preferences. From lotions and mousses to sprays and serums, self tanners can be applied in the comfort of your own home, at a time that suits your schedule. And can be applied as frequently as you want!
Spray Tan: While spray tans also offer convenience, they require a visit to a salon or spa. Booking appointments, traveling, and waiting for your turn can be time-consuming and inconvenient, especially for those with busy lifestyles. Even with the traveling techs now, you still have to get your tan around someone else's work schedule.
Winner for Convenience and Accessibility = Self Tanner
Control and Customization
Self Tanner: One of the significant advantages of self tanner is the level of control it offers. By applying the product yourself, you have complete control over the application process. You can customize the shade and intensity by adjusting the amount of product applied and ensuring even coverage. This allows for a more tailored and personalized tan that suits your desired look. On the flip side, we aren't professionals so this also makes room for error. But, the more you do it, the better you will be and there are definitely tips and tricks around making sure you have the perfect tan every time!
Spray Tan: With spray tans, the application is in the hands of a technician. While they are trained professionals, the outcome may not always match your expectations. Factors such as the technician's expertise, equipment quality, and technique can impact the final result. It may be challenging to communicate your exact preferences, resulting in a less personalized tan.

Self Tanner versus Spray Tan - Which is more natural? Which is more gradual?
Self Tanner: Self tanners are designed to provide a natural-looking tan that gradually develops over time. The active ingredient, DHA (dihydroxyacetone), interacts with the amino acids in the outermost layer of your skin, creating a temporary tan. By building up the color gradually, self tanners allow you to achieve a more believable and even tan, mimicking the sun's natural effects. Because you also control the product, you can put it on as often (or not often) as you want. You can also do things to soften the color like mix it with lotion.
Spray Tan: While spray tans provide instant results, the application process can sometimes lead to an uneven or unnatural-looking tan. Overspray, uneven distribution, or improper blending can result in streaks, patches, or an orange tint, making the tan appear less authentic. And my own personal horror story, the one time I had a spray tan by an actual tan artist, as it faded I looked like a leopard. Literally. Spots everywhere.

Skin Health and Safety
Self Tanner: Self tanners are generally safe for most skin types, as they do not involve UV exposure. They provide a healthy alternative to sunbathing or tanning beds, reducing the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. Furthermore, self tanners often contain additional skincare benefits such as moisturizing ingredients, antioxidants, and vitamins, which nourish and hydrate the skin.
Spray Tan: While spray tans do not involve UV radiation, they can sometimes contain additional ingredients that may not be suitable for everyone. Sensitivities or allergies to certain spray tan formulas or ingredients can cause skin irritation or adverse reactions. Additionally, inhaling spray tan mist can pose potential respiratory risks, especially for individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

So How Do You Embrace the Self Tanner Revolution?
First, how do you apply self tanner? Check out this video for a quick demonstration of 4 different ways you can apply self tanner. Personally, I combine all of these ways but you have to do whatever is comfortable for you!
Second, what self tanner do you use? There are several great products out there but there are equally many, many not so great products out there. A couple things I look for - one that does not stain sheets, clothes or hands, low to no odor, a nice bronze color and not an orangey color, one that fades naturally and won't get spotty.
