Look, I'm just gonna say it: waking up one day to find your previously well-behaved skin throwing a full-on temper tantrum is NOT the midlife surprise any of us asked for! But here we are—welcome to perimenopause, where your hormones basically decide to throw a going-away party and your skin is left with the hangover.

I'm right there in the trenches with you, watching my chin break out like I'm 16 again while simultaneously battling crow's feet. (Mother Nature's idea of a joke, apparently? Not funny, lady!)

What's REALLY Happening to Your Skin (Warning: It's a Hormone Horror Show)

Pin graphic with skincare flatlay and the Heading Title - Perimenopause and your skin: what's actually going on and what to do about it

Perimenopause typically gate-crashes your life sometime in your late 30s to early 40s and—spoiler alert—can stick around for YEARS. Your estrogen and progesterone are basically playing musical chairs, and your poor skin is desperately trying to keep up.  And you are just along for the ride with no exit ramp!

Here's what might be happening to your formerly predictable face:

Your skin is suddenly THIRSTY (like, desert-level parched) even if you've been oily your whole life
Random breakouts that appear literally the day before important events (they can sense fear)
Products you've used forever now make your skin freak out (your years long moisturizer bestie?  Yep, you might wake up tomorrow and your skin decides it hates it).
Gravity becomes your nemesis as skin elasticity waves goodbye (ramp up that collagen intake, girlfriend!)
Fine lines that weren't there in yesterday's selfie (I checked)
Skin thinning faster than my patience at the grocery store when I just forgot to shop but everyone is stocking up for the snowapocalypse in Tennessee which will actually only be a dusting of white stuff.
Lashes and brows playing a disappearing act (without any magic tricks to bring them back)

Stuff That Actually Works (I've Tried All The Things So You Don't Have To)

The good news? You don't need to take out a second mortgage for fancy treatments or dedicate your life to a 20-step routine.  Now listen, if that is your jam, you go for it sister.  Who am I to take away something you enjoy?  But if you are like me and have the patience of a small child after cotton candy, a soda and ice cream, my short go-to's might be exactly what you have been looking for!  At the end of the day, I don't mind spending money on QUALITY items and I am much more invested in quick routines that I can be consistent with.  And news flash, my skin likes that better too because no matter how much you spend on the skincare, it is useless in the bottle on your counter!  After much trial, error, and occasionally looking like a science experiment gone wrong, here's what I have found really helps:

Moisturizer is Your BFF Now!

Remember when you used to worry about looking too shiny? HA! Those were the days. Your skin barrier is basically sending SOS signals, so give it what it needs:
Look for moisturizers with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or squalane. Think of these ingredients like a tall glass of water after a night out—absolute lifesavers for parched skin.  I have done some research and found 5 highly rated and recommended moisturizers and you can check them out HERE.  I also wanted to share with you some of my favorite moisturizers from Nu Skin which you can check out HERE and as always, you get the 15% off discount automatically.  All items will add to your cart but just look through and find the one that is best for you and delete the rest!

Gentle is the New Strong

This is NOT the time to be scrubbing your face like you're trying to remove evidence. Your skin is going through enough without you attacking it with harsh products.
Switch to creamy, non-foaming cleansers and save the intense exfoliation for your next therapy session instead. Products with niacinamide and peptides are like that calm friend who talks you down when everyone else is panicking.  I did some more research and found some great cleansers you can check out HERE and also created another list for you on Nu Skin that you can check out HERE (same as above with all items adding to cart and the discount!

Retinol? Yes, but Make It Gentle!

Retinol bottle with the heading title - Retinol for Sensitive Skin, what you need to know.

Retinol is still skincare royalty, but your skin might need the kindergarten version now rather than the advanced class. Start with just 2-3 nights a week—your face will thank you by not turning into a red, flaky mess during your important Zoom meetings.

Pro tip: If your skin is throwing a full rebellion, try buffering (moisturizer first, then retinol) or check out bakuchiol—it's like retinol's chill cousin who gets the job done without the drama.

If you want to see some great Retinol products and Bakuchiol (retinol alternative).  I made you a list HERE and HERE!

Your Eyes Need Extra Love

The skin around your eyes is already thinner than your patience after homeschooling during lockdown, and perimenopause makes it worse. A good eye cream with peptides or caffeine can help your eyes look less like you've been up all night doom-scrolling (even when you have).  I have put together some of the best rated eye creams HERE and some of my Nu Skin Favorites HERE.

SPF is Your Ride or Die

Sun damage is like that one friend who makes every bad situation worse. With your skin getting thinner and more fragile, daily SPF 30+ isn't just good advice—it's your new religion. Even when it's cloudy. Even when you're "just running errands." ESPECIALLY then.  And look, I learned this the hard way.  I was the girl who would go outside religiously with no more than an SPF 15 on (if that!) and was frequently in the tanning bed and would see the skincare warning signs and literally think "but it won't ever happen to me".  Until it did.  I was 35 when I was diagnosed with Advanced Melanoma and my whole life changed.  Now I have a few less lymphnodes, two scars (one pretty huge) as evidence and a yearly date with not only a skin doctor but also an oncologist - for life.  Don't make the mistake I made.

Lash & Brow Rescue Squad

If you've noticed your mascara suddenly looks sad and pathetic despite your best efforts, you're not alone. A good lash and brow serum can help bring back some of that fullness.  Couple that with a great tubing mascara and you are SET.  And believe me, I have been around the block with losing eyelashes more times than I care to count (I have a thyroid issue to blame as well).  I feel like I have tried every eyelash serum on the planet (even prescription ones) but about a year ago, I finally found the holy grail.  You can check it out RIGHT HERE.  Use the code KALIISUE20 for 20% off!  Trust me on this one—I went from "did my lashes move out without telling me?" to "oh, there you are!" in about 8 weeks.  And when it comes to tubing mascara, none compare to THIS ONE!

You're Not Losing Your Mind (Just Some Collagen)

Here's something nobody tells you about perimenopause: you start questioning EVERYTHING. "Is this normal? Am I imagining things? Why does nobody talk about this?!"

You're not imagining it. Your skin IS changing, and it IS because of hormones, and NO, you're not the only one wondering why your face suddenly needs a complete instruction manual rewrite.

The good news is that your skin can still look amazing—it just needs different care now. Think of it as upgrading your skincare, not admitting defeat. We're not giving up; we're getting smarter!

P.S. Remember: Chocolate doesn't cause breakouts at our age. That's just a myth. (winks while hiding emergency chocolate stash!)  And if you need more Skin info, I wrote another blog post about Skincare after 35!  And when it comes to makeup, I have lots of Faves, but I broke down all my favorite affordable favorites HERE!
